OLD SAYBROOK ROUTE 1 CORRIDOR STUDY

Team: Jacob Reidel, Andrew Lyon, Tony Goldsby

The YUDW worked with the Old Saybrook Land Use Department and town officials to develop a study of the entire length of the Boston Post Road within the boundaries of Old Saybrook. The study considered current and future patterns of development, zoning, streetscape, traffic calming and pedestrian and bicycle access, and architectural and site design guidelines.

Through a series of presentations and workshops with town agencies, ideas were solicited and conceptual site plans explored. The framework developed from this work divides the corridor into several distinctive sections and nodes, and then proposes strategies for protecting and enhancing the character of each section, while making the nodes, including the east and west gateway nodes, into more pedestrian friendly environments, where future development will be more like Old Saybrook’s attractive Main Street district and less like a generic suburban strip.
