The Yale Urban Design Workshop (YUDW) provides a forum for faculty and students from the School of Architecture, as well as students and faculty from other professional schools at Yale, to engage in the study of issues, ideas, and practical problems in the field of urban design. Since its founding in 1992, the YUDW has worked with communities all across the state of Connecticut, providing planning and design assistance on projects ranging from comprehensive plans, economic development strategies and community visions to the design of public spaces, streetscapes and individual community facilities.

The YUDW’s clients include small towns, city neighborhoods, planning departments, Chambers of Commerce, community development corporations, citizen groups, and private developers. Current projects include town-center, neighborhood, and public space plans for five towns in Connecticut – Bridgeport, Old Saybrook, Fairfield, Clinton, and Bethany – as well as an ongoing collaboration with the Dwight Neighborhood and the Greater Dwight Development Corporation, both of New Haven. This collaboration has, in the past, included a comprehensive neighborhood plan, an addition to the Dwight Elementary School, and is now focused on the completion of a 9,000 sq. ft. daycare center and office building, currently under construction. The YUDW was part of a team recently selected to design the new campus of Gateway Community College in downtown New Haven.
