WINSTED MAIN STREET REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

In May 1993 the YUDW conducted a four-day charrette as part of a comprehensive planning effort for Winsted’s Main Street. A two-mile long section of Route 44, this scenic and historic corridor had lost most of its south side in the flood of 1955 and then been widened to a virtual 7-lane highway, gradually losing much of its character and commercial vitality. The charrette focused on streetscape and street profile, traffic calming, preservation, retail revitalization and re-integrating the parallel watercourse of the Mad River as a major open space resource. Consultants to the team prepared detailed recommendations on landscaping and environmental issues, as well as zoning. Recently, Winsted and the YUDW returned to the recommendations of the 1993 report, and the Town is currently implementing many of the proposals.
