Friday-Saturday, November 4-5, 2011
Earthquakes, hurricanes and other natural disasters kill thousands every year, impoverishing communities and wrecking whole economies. Yet, the explosive growth of cities is making these problems vastly worse – unsafe structures will cost billions of dollars and millions of lives in coming decades. This symposium, convened by the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation and the Yale School of Architecture, will explore the challenges architects face in countries with weak or non-existent building code systems. Leaders in architecture, engineering, business, and government will explore new ways of ensuring safer buildings in the developing world.
