This symposium, convened by Anthony Vidler and held in anticipation of an exhibition of the work of James Stirling being organized by the School of Architecture, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and the Yale Center for British Art, will examine an architect whose career was not without controversy, but whose built work and projects stand out as among the most influential and innovative of the second half of the 20th century. Drawing on historical sources from the early avant-garde and the British vernacular tradition as a way to enrich and renew the often formulaic commonplaces of mid-century modernism, Stirling’s work was committed to modernity in all its contradictory aspects. This openness made Stirling a remarkable teacher, notably at Yale in 1959 and as Davenport Visiting Professor from 1966 until 1984, inspiring generations of students to break the bounds of convention and explore the potential of architectural language in the late modern age. The symposium will explore a wide range of questions relating to the historical and critical significance of Stirling’s work.
