Newman, Herbert S.

Mr. Newman has been on the Yale faculty since 1965 and is currently the Building Project coordinator. As a principal of Newman Architects, his work is found on many campuses and he has been active in planning, preserving, and rebuilding cities. He received the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture from the AIA for lifetime achievement in 1995 and the Master Builder Award from Habitat for Humanity in 1993. He has received national AIA Honor Awards for Design Excellence for the redevelopment of New Haven’s Ninth Square District, the restoration and renovation of Yale’s Battell Chapel, and the Center for American Arts at the Yale University Art Gallery; national AIA/ALA awards for Yale Law School Library and Colgate University Library; more than twenty-five AIA/Connecticut Design Awards; and many New England Regional Design Awards. Mr. Newman’s firm is the subject of a monograph entitled Herbert S. Newman and Partners: Selected and Current Works, which is part of the Images Publishing Master Architect Series.
