Project Description

My proposal takes one simple room and transforms the site into three scales of affordable living for artisans along 16th Street in San Francisco. The idea of taking the same element to create multiple types provides a fairly simple method of aggregation and phasing. In a rather bland landscape of single family homes that is often portrayed as picturesque there lies an opportunity for the way we dwell to afford a living structure that is present in the city of San Francisco but not utilized to its full potential. This project positions autonomy as a critical factor in relieving ourselves as a society from the burdens of domestic labor where autonomy has an inverse relationship to domesticity. At certain stages in our lives we do not need everything there is to come with domestic life in our own personal space; all we need are the minimum levels of privacy that allow us to live in good mental and physical health.
