Project Description

The project has two main programmatic elements with different needs: a student residence and an institute of culinary learning. This tension between private and public is also evident in the site, which is situated within primarily commercial waterfront. To reconcile the building as both a participant in this commercial waterfront and a friendly neighbor to the residences beyond, a market hall typology was adopted. The canopy roof states that the building is a citywide institution, yet the open ground floor plan – above which the residences and school hover – provides a blank canvas for the local community to utilized as a market.
