Project Description

This project references a landscape that existed in St. John and Newfoundland in the 19th Century: “flakes,” or flat platforms made of wood. The proposed culinary school and student residences connect the urban fabric on the north and south waterfronts using flakes. The site is a soft, garden landscape, which is used by the students to produce and harvest vegetables for the culinary institute. All public programs are below the flake at the waterfront level, whereas the dorms are situated above. Students have their own informal dinning and cooking spaces within the bridges that connect the main dorms.
