Transnational Architecture and Urbanism
Since the 1990s, increasingly multinational modes of urban
planning and architectural design have arisen, especially concerning flagship projects, prominent buildings and places. Drawing on his recent book titled Transnational Architecture and Urbanism: Rethinking How Cities Plan, Transform and Learn, Davide Ponzini presents problematic issues such as the spectacularization of the urban environment and the global circulation of similar plans and projects. He shows how architects, planners, and policy makers can critically learn from practice, cope with these and other transnational issues, and put better planning in place.
Tactical Urbanism in Brazil: The Rise of Urban Labs Despite sharing opinions on its effectiveness, Tactical Urbanism has grown in practical terms and debate along the XXI century. Therefore, this presentation aims to analyze this method’s
potential and challenges. We will discuss the adaptation process involved when Tactical Urbanism creates relevance in a
developing country like Brazil, where urban labs have shown that this approach has played an important role in the collective urban conscience.
Davide Ponzini is Associate Professor, Politecnico di Milano, and director of the Tau-Lab. He has been a visiting scholar at Yale, Johns Hopkins, Columbia University, and Sciences Po Paris and Visiting Professor at TU Munich. He is co-author (with photographer Michele Nastasi) of the book: Starchitecture (Monacelli Press). Co-editor (with Harvey Molotch) of the book The New Arab Urban (NYU Press) and author of the book Transnational Architecture and Urbanism (Routledge).
Larissa Garrido has a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning from the Federal University of Pernambuco and an exchange year diploma from the University of Kansas. In 2017 she co-founded an urban group, activating public spaces and engaging citizens for two years. On this occasion, she became familiar with the concept of Tactical urbanism and placemaking, her main field of research today. Larissa is in the final year of her Master’s program at the Federal University of Pernambuco, co-advised by Professor Alan Plattus from Yale University. Her passion is to understand cities’ essence, poetry, community, and singularity. Her study, Tactical Urbanism in Brazil: the Rise of Urban Labs, was financed in part by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - Brasil (CAPES) - Finance Code 001.
